Living in Port Colborne

History

Port Colborne survived a long and storied history, a testament to the fortitude of her people.  The city’s roots can be traced back to the United Empire Loyalist settlements after the American Revolution.  Originally known as Gravelly Bay, Port Colborne was renamed after Sir John Colborne in 1832.  He was a British war hero and Lt. Gov. when the First Welland Canal opened its southern entrance in 1833.  The canal was an important transportation route with its connection to ships sailing Lake Erie and the Great Lakes.  Port Colburn merged with the adjacent Village of Humberstone in 1952.

Recreation

Lake Erie beaches, marinas and trails leading to Niagara Falls bring people to “Niagara’s South Coast.”  The community has a plethora of interesting activities – from golfing and trails to fishing and beaches, shopping districts, recreation and much more.  The Friendship Trail and Welland Canal Parkways Trail are good beginnings.  Folks visit the beautiful parks and hang out at Sugarloaf Harbour Marina for fishing and boating activities.
